In the late 1960s, William Short refused to return to combat, served two months in a stockade, and received a general discharge. In 1986, he and his wife, Willia Seidenberg, began interviewing war protesters and taking their pictures. In 1992, the portraits and some text from the interviews were shown at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass.
